FORT MONROE, Va. (WAVY) - The Army is using video game technology in their battle against off duty accidents and fatalities.
Produced by the US Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), the game, in the form of an interactive video virtual experience, is titled "Off Duty, On Guard."
The game allows viewers to play the parts of the various characters, make decisions, and see the consequences of their choices. Army officials say the vignettes are entertaining and are based on actual accident experiences.
According to Dave Prentice, TRADOC Safety Director, the video was "designed to appeal to young gamers who are used to gaming technology and are also major victims of off-duty mishaps. In addition to soldiers, this video is appropriate for members of other services as well as the civilian population at large. Because of the universality of the design, it can be used for high school and college students, who engage in the same types of recreational activities, sometimes with tragic results. It has been well received and endorsed by educators and safety professionals as an innovative approach to altering dangerous behaviors."
The video is split into two stories, "Full Throttle," which deals with vehicle safety issues and "On the Waterfront," a tale is about boating and water safety. Viewers choose characters and get to "spend a day in their shoes" while navigating through a series of activities and decisions. Along the way, players are given behavior choices. Some choices result in happy endings, some do not. The game is similar to an extra feature DVD that allows the viewer to choose an alternate ending, but this game allows the player to change the script throughout the video at each decision point.
